Self-Care Health Fair

.This year we hosted a Health and Wellness Fair for our entire school. Our event provided our fellow students with valuable information about how your body, mind and spirit are connected. We provided information and resources that will inspire our community to prioritize their wellness and get healthy together.

Thursday, April 5th from 10:10am-12:50pm. Each grade (6th-8th) came out during one full period to engage with the fair and its guests.

How Did We Prepare?
In preparation for the H&W fair, we educated ourselves about nutritional facts, healthy eating, a variety of exercises and how each benefits our body, participated in exploratory art activities to care for our mind and spirit and worked as a team to gain more knowledge. We met every Monday after-school and some lunch times to assign roles, plan the event and make posters. We discussed how we would run the event and what we wanted at it. We spent time making the fruit kabobs as well.

By continuously learning about Health and Wellness, we hope to become experts who can pass along that knowledge to our school community.

PRE-EVENT: We also put up posters and hosted a Smoothie and Yoga event to spread the word that the Health and Wellness Fair is coming up. During this event we made over 100 fresh fruit smoothies and created our own yoga video. We taught the videos routine to students who showed up to our event. They received a smoothie for their participation.

Who Was at our Event?

Carlie Carpio: A yoga instructor and personal trainer
Multiple organizations that represent about healthy eating, nutrition, and hydration through both USC and Americorp
Cayenne Wellness Center: A sickle cell treatment and advocacy organization
Emperor's College: An alternative Eastern medicine college
St. Johns Hospital: youth mental health department

Many of our guests hosted interactive booths with games, quizzes and prizes. One of our guests even ran fun fitness competitions. We gave out a 'passport' to each student and they were asked to get it stamped by each booth if they participated in a meaningful way.  Any student who filled their passport was awarded with a freshly made fruit kabob made by our team.
